Since 1972

The Upper East Regional Museum is in Bolgatanga, the capital of the Upper East Region.  It was established in 1972 and installed in its current location in 1991, by the Ghana National Commission on Culture. The museum is situated behind the Regional Library and adjacent to the craft village.

Our Mission

The museum aims to preserve the material culture of the Upper East Region, while educating the populace, especially the youth, on the need to protect and remember their local heritage.

Exhibits include: local pottery; paintings; musical instruments; jewellery; weaponry; chiefs’ possessions; carved darkwood stools; and bronze ancestral vases.

Our Tours

The Upper East Regional Museum also offers tours of other sites of interest in the region, including the Tongo-Tengzuk Hills and Shrines, and the Paga Crocodile Pond.
